Natural Gas Exploration and Leasing

!

Since 2005 Penn State Cooperative Extension Offices have received an increasing number of questions from landowners about leasing land for natural gas exploration. While gas leases have been around for many years, the amount of money offered per acre has created a flood of activity in Pennsylvania. The "front" of this activity moved from northcentral Pennsylvania to southwestern Pennsylvania and now into Northeast Pennsylvania in an intense blizzard of landmen, speculators, brokers and energy companies all trying to "tie-up" large blocks of land with a company lease.

In response to the demand for Education and assist in responsible decisionmaking, Penn State Extension Staff have created a Natural Gas Exploration and Leasing Team to provide the general public with answers to many of their questions. Ken Balliet, Earle Robbins and Thomas Murphy make up the core of this team, supported by experts in industry and government. Outreach to the general public takes many forms.

  • Basic and Advanced Workshops are offered throughout the State and generally through the County Extension offices. Demand has been high and most workshops have been held before capacity crowds. While the initial interest in Pennsylvania was focused on the Trenton Black River Play, the Marcellus Shale Play has seemed to surpass this resource in interest from energy companies. Drilling has begun in many counties with some success and activity is expected to continue to grow.

Don Butler:NEWS ABOUT TEXAS' BARNETT SHALE LEASING ACTIVITY: Source: Fort Worth Star-Telegram http://startelegram.typepad.com/barnett_shale/ Burleson groups, Chesapeake reach record $27,200/acre deal Two big Burleson property owners groups have jointly accepted Chesapeake Energy's leasing offer of $27,200 per acre and a 25.25 percent royalty, organizers say. The central Burleson and south Burleson groups together represent upwards of 2,000 acres, including school district and city property, said Carter Mahaney of Burleson Community of Gas Lease Holdouts, the south side group. The other group is the Central Burleson Holdouts. Also bidding was XTO Energy, which offered $22,000 an acre and a 25.5 percent royalty, Mahaney said. Mahaney said Chesapeake told the groups it has secured several drill sites capable of reaching much of the city, which is partly in southern Tarrant County and mostly in northern Johnson County, the two most productive counties in the Barnett Shale field. He said the groups will rely in the city's recently modified drilling ordinance to provide major environmental and safety protections. Mahaney said his group will continue to accepting members through May 15, and he hopes lease signing will be completed by the end of June.
Joe Urbanick:My brother ,sister and I own 288 acres in the Snow Shoe Twp area of Centre Co, it seems as trhough the properties surronding us have been placed under lease and combining with other land owners does not seem possible. We have an existing lease in force since 2000 for $3 an acre, which is due to expire in 9/08 I was told by T S Dudley rep that any offer he made me could be picked up by the existing leasor. True or False.
Clay Gatlin:I'm trying to find out what they are paying too. Give me a call at (601) 540-6403 and let me know...
