Since 2005 Penn State Cooperative Extension Offices have received an increasing number of questions from landowners about leasing land  for natural gas exploration. While gas leases have been around for many years, the amount of money offered per acre has created a flood of activity in Pennsylvania. The "front" of this activity moved from northcentral Pennsylvania to southwestern Pennsylvania and now into Northeast Pennsylvania in an intense blizzard of landmen, speculators, brokers and energy companies all trying to "tie-up" large blocks of land with a company lease.

In response to the demand for Education and assist in responsible decisionmaking, Penn State Extension Staff created a Natural Gas Exploration and Leasing Team to provide the general public with answers to many of their questions. Ken Balliet, Earle Robbins(retired 2008) and Tom Murphy made up the initial core of this team, supported by experts in industry and government. Recently dozens of other Educators have joined in providing research-based programs to assist families, and communities with the varied impacts of this oppportunity. Outreach to the general public takes many forms. This web site is your electronic portal to all the programs and up-to-date information we have. Visit often. Bookmark it now!

Penn State Programs are offered in local communities throughout the State and generally marketed through each County Extension office. Demand has been high and most workshops have been held before capacity crowds. While the initial interest in Pennsylvania was focused on the Trenton Black River Play, the Marcellus Shale Play has surpassed this resource in interest from energy companies. Drilling has begun in many counties and activity is expected to continue to grow. Workshops and semnars offered by Penn State Extension will follow this dynamic exploration and provide timely information and resources to landowners, communities and local and state governments.
